REMUS JOHN LUPIN
Name: Remus John Lupin
Nicknames/Aliases: Moony, Rem (both only to the Marauders)
Age: 16
Date of Birth: April 1, 1960
Blood Status: pureblood, technically… though most people wouldn’t classify him that way
Hair Color: brownish blond
Eye Color: brown-gold
Physical Description: The one thing people notice about Remus, is his eyes. Which, ironically, is the thing he dislikes most about his appearance. They’re a beautiful light brown with gold hints, but he thinks they look too much like wolf eyes, so he grows out his matching hair to try and draw less attention to them. He has striking features, boyish but still with some sort of feral edge. Physically, he’s scrawny, bordering on malnourished when it gets closer to the moons. Most of his body is covered in jagged scars, thick and disgusting in his opinion, inflicted by the wolf when the moon is high. The biggest one resides on his shoulder, where the infected teeth first cut into his flesh. Remus isn’t seen in much other than his school uniform, but he does have some normal, boring jeans and shirts for days when he can dress casually.

General Personality: Remus, above all else, is loyal. He’s never had very many friends, and he sometimes feels like he doesn’t deserve the ones he has. So, despite his belief that they might abandon him, he is nothing but loyal. Other than that, he is a polite and somewhat reserved boy, with scrupulous manners and a quiet charm. He’s extremely intelligent, with almost top marks in all of his classes (beat out by one Lily Evans.) Or at least, that’s what his professors know about him.
His friends know a different Remus. Sure, he’s still nice and polite, but he’s got a quick, sharp wit for anyone who winds up on the wrong side of his tongue. His patented lopsided smile gets him out of almost anything, and he’s not afraid to use his puppy dog eyes against them to get his way (especially when chocolate is involved.) He uses his smarts to help plan elaborate pranks, making sure they have a way out so they cut down their rate of getting caught. Of course, sometimes he has to reign them in, due to his mile-wide moral streak and his status as prefect.
However, under being everyone’s best friend, there lurks a Remus that hardly anyone sees. The scared little boy cowering in fear of the monster that lives inside of him. Because that’s what he is. A scarred, frightening monster who would gladly kill his best friends without a second thought. He has to keep himself under constant control to keep the wolf at bay most of the month, and he can’t help but be snappy the week surrounding the moon. But he would never admit any of this to anyone else. It’s his cross to bear. No one else’s.

Brief History: Remus John Lupin was born on April Fools Day, much to the amusement of his older brother. The Lupin family couldn’t have been happier with the newest addition, especially when his birth coincided with his father’s promotion at work, letting the family live in comfort and harmony. All would have been perfect, if it weren’t for one warm June night when Remus was five years old.
He had sneaked out of bed and into the backyard to catch fireflies. Little Remus didn’t hear the growling in the bushes until it was too late. Fenrir Greyback leapt out of the foliage, jaws dripping and eyes glowing, pouncing on the small boy. His screams alerted his father, who tore out of bed and into the backyard to find his son bleeding, his attacker chuckling evilly. John was Fenrir’s true target, and before Kendra or Romulus made it out to the yard, the patron of the Lupin family was dead on the ground, his murderer long gone, only distant howls as evidence of his presence.
Romulus managed to fire-call St. Mungo’s for his little brother, as Kendra was too shocked to move at the sight of her husband’s mangled body. As soon as the Healers had bandaged him up, Romulus got his younger brother out, knowing even at age eight that if they knew what had bitten him, they would take Remus away. Kendra agreed, weakened from her husband’s death and her son’s mangling, and took her children away to France before anyone noticed.
The small Lupin family made their home in a town near France, subletting an apartment with a basement. That was where Remus spent his moons, screaming and howling to the cement walls, ripping apart his own flesh for lack of others to mutilate. Each morning his brother would bandage him up, their mother unable to handle the sight of blood anymore.
And so they lived like that, secluded but loving, until a letter arrived for Romulus the summer after his eleventh birthday. His mother had been teaching them at home, but she insisted that Romulus go to Hogwarts for a proper education. Remus missed his brother terribly, especially on full moons when he had to bandage himself. But he grew used to it, and soon enough, his own Hogwarts letter, much to his surprise. He couldn’t believe that he would get to go to school like a normal wizard, and there wouldn’t even be any trouble with his… condition. Professor Dumbledore had seen to it.
Remus’s mother chose to remain in France, while both of her sons traveled to England to attend Hogwarts. Romulus warned Remus that he should lie low, so no one would work out his secret. That plan went to hell the moment Remus met James and Sirius on the train to Hogwarts. While Remus was intimidated by the two boys, something about his demeanor seemed to draw them in and he was all too happy to be accepted into their friendship. Of course, the burden of his secret remained. It helped that Rom usually came with him on full moon nights, spending his time in the hospital wing to wait with Madame Pomfrey until the moon set so he could help her patch up his beloved brother. But as hard as Remus tried to hide it, his friends worked out his secret. Remus half-expected the Ministry to swoop down on him as he sat there in front of James, Sirius and Peter, but to his amazement, they merely nodded and continued to treat him like they always had.
In addition to the Marauders, Remus struck up a quiet friendship with the object of James’ affections, Lily Evans. The two bonded over academics initially, then found a solid friend in each other. While they have objections to who they associate with (Lily with Severus and Remus with the Marauders,) they look past that and always have a good time together. Lily, in fact, is the only one who knows Remus’s other secret…
Somewhere in the beginning of fourth year, when Sirius began to take an interest in girls, Remus was taking an interest in him. He wasn’t sure what made him fall in love with his best friend, but he can’t find a way out of it. Not when, every day, Sirius is there, smiling and encouraging him in whatever he wants to do, or ruffling his hair and teasing him about reading too much. He doesn’t think he’ll ever pluck up the courage to actually tell Sirius about his feelings. There’s no point - Sirius could have anyone, so why would he pick Remus?
Of course, the emotions for his friend were intensified when he found out he, along with James and Peter, had become Animagi illegally so they could accompany him on full moon nights. While Remus is grateful for the company, he’s intensely paranoid that they’ll get caught, or that he’ll give them the slip and accidentally bite someone. But James and Sirius’ quite confidence make him keep his fears to himself. They risked their lives for him - he should just be grateful, after all.

Dust swirled around him as he plopped the heavy book down onto the library table. It shot up his nose, making him sneeze violently and earning him a glare from Madam Pince. Remus shot her an apologetic smile before slipping quietly into his seat and carefully opening the cover of his chosen reading material. It was the rare afternoon where James and Sirius had Quidditch practice, and Peter had chosen to watch, leaving Remus to his own devices for a couple hours. He had finished his homework, so he decided to take the opportunity for some uninterrupted reading.
However, the moment he set his eyes on the first page, he thought of what usually happened when he tried to do this in the common room. Sirius would bound up, all black hair and gangly puppy energy. He would steal the book from Remus’s lap, saying ‘Why are you reading, Moony? You’re already smarter than the rest of us combined… your head will explode if you learn anymore!’ And then his lips would spread in that rakish smile of his and Remus would give up reading because there would be no way that he would concentrate after that look.
A small sigh pushed past his lips and he traced a finger over the page he had tried to read. Now his head was full of thoughts of Sirius. Great, even when he was away from the boy, he still plagued his mind. So much for an afternoon to himself. But he couldn’t be too upset. He could never be upset with Sirius.
